Our Commitment to Responsible Business Practices

Sustainability is a topic we actively address as a law firm. At our offices, we are working to understand and gradually reduce our environmental footprint.

In keeping with our motto #localeverywhere, we take responsibility wherever we operate— through internal measures as well as through social engagement.

Data basis: Carbon footprint

Reliable data forms the basis for our measures. We track the following across all locations:

  • Energy consumption (in the areas of electricity, heating, cooling, and the vehicle fleet)

  • Business and work-related travel

  • Procurement of electronic devices

The analysis is conducted in accordance with the internationally recognized GHG Protocol:

Scope 1: Direct emissions (our own facilities and vehicles)
Scope 2: Indirect emissions (purchased energy)
Scope 3: Additional indirect emissions along the value chain, where reliable data is available (e.g. business travel, commuting, procurement of equipment)

This data helps us understand where emissions originate and how we can reduce them in a targeted manner. We receive support from ClimatePartner.

Our Measures

Avoid

  • Digital files instead of paper

  • Video conferences instead of travel

  • Reduction of unnecessary business travel

  • Promotion of working from home

Reduce

  • Energy-efficient office organization

  • Resource-efficient work processes

  • Promotion of climate-friendly mobility (public transportation, e-bikes)

  • Adjustment of company vehicle fleets

Support for climate protection projects

Emissions cannot always be completely avoided. That is why we also support certified climate protection projects that avoid, reduce, or bind CO₂ while simultaneously promoting broader social objectives.

Project 2023

“Ceramic water filters save CO₂ and improve health” in Laos: Ceramic water filters are being distributed nationwide to provide clean drinking water, reduce CO₂ emissions, and alleviate health risks.

Sustainability and Employment Law

Sustainability also touches on employment law and labor law matters, e.g.:

  • Mobility guidelines

  • Home office and remote work regulations

  • ESG-compliant corporate policies

Dr. Oliver Grimm, Partner and member of the ESG team, says:

Our goal is to make our resource consumption transparent and to develop targeted measures. At the same time, these experiences provide us with valuable insights for advising our clients on ESG and employment law and labor law matters.

ESG Consulting at Littler

In addition to our internal measures, we provide comprehensive advice to companies on employment law and labor law matters related to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).

Our services include, among others:

  • Audit: Assessing whether your company is subject to ESG reporting requirements such as the CSRD

  • Design: Developing a target framework for employment law and legal requirements

  • Implementation: Drafting legally sound clauses, adapting existing policies

  • Practical solutions: Mobility guidelines, remote work, low-emission incentive systems

This demonstrates that sustainable corporate governance affects not only the environment and society, but also people management and legal structuring.
